Performance Barriers

Errors and slumps are a natural part of participation in sport. However, you should consider counseling to learn and develop performance skills if you are:

  • Performing at a lower level than your potential
  • Having trouble with specific skills
  • Inconsistently performing in practices and competitions
  • Experience competitive anxiety

Sometimes personal concerns that seem unrelated to sport can actually negatively influence performances. You may find it helpful to talk with a psychologist who understands the sport context and culture, and the impact that sport and personal concerns have on each other. Other personal reasons that lead athletes to work with a sport psychologist are:

  • Academic difficulties
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Disordered Eating & Negative Body Image
  • Relationship or Family Problems
  • Low Self-Esteem
  • Chronic Injuries
  • Overtraining / Burnout
